Degrees of freedom
The more choices, the more freedom, the more freedom, the harder it is to decide what to do next. When parachute jumping, at the key point, there are only two degrees of freedom: jump or not. When marketing, of course, there are more degrees of freedom than in any other endeavor an organization does. It's almost never A or B. You need several alphabets just to list the available options. If you don't view that as a good thing, it's probably worth doing something else instead.
The Beal Deal with Kim Kopp Krause Berg (@kim_cre8pc)

Good Saturday morning Pilgrims! Today’s Beal Deal guest has gone by many names in her career–including Dancing Thunder at some point–but we lovingly know her as Kim Krause Berg. You know those people that you can’t help smile and want to hug every time you see them? Yeah, I feel that way every time I see Kim. She has a kind heart and a mind for usability that is pretty much unmatched in my humble opinion. I reached out to Kim to ask her about the sale of her forum, her passion in life, and why...
When you sell unlimited hope...
then all news is bad news. That's because news is fact, what happened, not hope, and the truth can't possibly be as good as the hope was. The problem with marketing promises that spin out of control, that pile expectations on top of dreams, is that when reality appears, when the quarterly numbers or the new policies or the final product arrives, it will inevitably disappoint. This is the challenge of the Kickstarter artist, the growth stock CEO and the well-published author. Dreams are...
The SEC Says its Okay For CEOs to Talk Shop on Social

When Netflix CEO Reed Hastings posted a Facebook update congratulating his content licensing team on facilitating 1 billion hours of viewing, I’m sure he didn’t expect to influence government policy. Then again. . . maybe that was the plan all along. The Securities and Exchange Commission jumped all over Hastings for the post, because they thought it violated the rules that govern public disclosure of business information. Regulation Fair Disclosure says that public companies have to disclose...
Revitalizing the Classics: About.com and Digg Say They Have a Plan

Is anyone surprised that About.com is still standing? Before Wikipedia, it was the best place to find a lot of specific information about a wide range of topics with everything from Action Figures to Zoology. What sets the company apart from standard blog sites is their extremely specific template style which leans heavily on evergreen resource pages. They’re also known for the amount of text they publish on a page and they are the reigning champs when it comes to internal linking. They’re also...
Facebook Home Arrives and Opinions Abound

From time to time a new announcement comes around that gets a ton of attention that is all over the board. Yesterday’s announcement by Facebook of a sort of Facebook phone has created plenty of discussion around the industry. Let’s take a look at what the pundits had to say: Gigaom’s Om Malik says plenty in the title of his post “Why Facebook Home bothers me: It destroys any notion of privacy“. He also laments: This future is going to happen – and it is too late to debate. However, the problem...

Neophilia as a form of hiding
Every once in a while someone will say to me, "yeah, sure, I've heard that before... what do you have that's new?" In contemporary art or movies, it makes perfect sense to be focused on the bleeding edge, on the new idea that's never been previously contemplated. But when we're discussing our goals, our passion and the way we interact with the culture, it seems to me that what works is significantly more important than what's new. Racing to build your organization around the latest social...
Melcher’s Latest Tablet Study is Now Available for the Tablet

In an average week, I skim a dozen marketing related studies, review a handful of new infographs and “check out” more than 50 articles on the subject in order to stay informed and write these posts. What I’ve never done, was download a marketing study to my tablet – until now. Melcher Media just released the latest finding from VivaKi’s The Pool, “an ongoing initiative to uncover advertising solutions of the future, in conjunction with advertisers and publishers.” This installment is called...
Tag, You’re It! LinkedIn Adds Ability to Flag Contacts in Updates and Comments

LinkedIn is adding the ability to tag people in status updates and comments and I’m not sure how I feel about that. It’s all pretty simple. When you type a name in either the update box or a comment box, the Connections feed opens and tries to match the name you typed with the people on your list. Choose the correct “James” , then finish your message. The tagging tool is all about starting a conversation. If you really want the other person to respond, though, you should go with something more...
Google Taking Lion’s Share of Mobile Ad Dollars

Mobile advertising is a growth industry. By how much depends on your source of information but no matter the source, if you don’t see a serious growth curve / upside then it’s not likely to be reliable. Let’s take a look at what eMarketer sees as the future of growth for mobile ad revenue. Nice numbers even if you chopped them in half. With this kind of growth you might suspect that there will be plenty to go around no matter the size of the advertising venue but in this case it will be a...
11 Blog & Social Content Marketing Tools I Use (Almost) Every Day

Content creation isn’t easy and I, for one, am very glad. I’ve been writing online content for almost a decade now and have truly enjoyed the increased emphasis on quality over quantity and targeted messaging we’ve seen over the past few years. Companies are now fully aware that simply distributing information on a regular basis is not enough. As Lee pointed out in a recent article on the reasons companies are challenged by content creation, “Anyone with half a brain can create information, but...
Surprise!
We like positive surprises and fear negative ones. That means (surprisingly) that it's better to have a consistently negative experience than to confront one that's sometimes negative and sometimes neutral. The TSA, for example, would be easier to take if they were always consistently irrational, time-wasting and disrespectful, thus eliminating the risk and replacing it with certainty. On the other hand, a positive experience that's positive all the time pales in comparison with the experience...
Will People Pay Attention Instead of Cash to Level Up Non-Gaming Mobile Apps?

Freemium is a concept that works in mobile gaming. Freemium apps brought in almost 10 billion in revenue last year and 80% of that went to games. We’ll pay to level up faster, get the hottest virtual goods and unlock areas we’ve never seen before. We’ll pay to keep playing. But Tapjoy has discovered that people are also willing to pay attention instead of cash. Tapjoy Mobile Value Exchange model lets players earn credits and upgrades by completing brand tasks. Want to play a few more rounds of...
Twitter Expands Card System to Include Mobile App Download Links and More

Twitter may have been designed for short burst messaging, but it’s grown into a graceful data flow of text, photos, and videos. Using text speak (FTW!), hashtags and “@” symbols, we’ve learned to communicate a lot with just a few characters. Still, we could all use a little more space to make our point, so Twitter is giving it to us. No, they’re not dialing up the character count. They’re giving us more cards to play with. Cards are those expanded Tweets that show up in your stream bearing...
Google: Link Sellers' Linkees Not Necessarily On Hook | Dynamic Logic Can Count (Mobile Users)
Publishing: AdExchanger asked a few well placed people whether or not ad automation might come to the local ads market anytime soon. The answers weren't terribly optimistic. Digiday got around to figuring that autoplaying audio and video is bad practice for advertisers. A question as yet unanswered: why is it that newspaper sites seem to be the [...]<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/marketingvox/rss/~4/PKx_zC7LXvM" height="1" width="1"/>

Sprint: The text

As one of the most recognizable names in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Dale Earnhardt Jr. knows the risks of being distracted while driving. Throughout April (distracted driving month) he’s lending his expertise in a new TV spot by Team Sprint - Leo Burnett and Digitas - to educate drivers about the Sprint Drive First app which helps drivers avoid the distraction of texting while driving. The hilarious 30-second spot features Earnhardt using the Sprint Drive First mobile application, which can...

Google’s Local Product Gets a Partial Lift

In cosmetic surgery, if you don’t want to do a complete overhaul or aren’t terribly confident that doing everything at once is the best idea there is an option to a partial ‘insert procedure here’. Now, for the record, I had to Google this while concept since cosmetic surgery is not my thing and at this point for me the only viable option is a trade-in but I am not sure that is possible. Now take this concept to the Internet space. Its common for companies to do things in a more piecemeal...

Real-Time Marketing Smarts: Companies Killing It with Off-the-Cuff Content

Real-time social engagement is a great way for brands to stay top of mind, build their social audience and even influence the buying decisions of consumers. On-the-fly upsets to content plans and rapid response content creation are counterintuitive for most brands, though. At TopRank, we coach brands on careful planning, implementation, measurement and ongoing improvement based on insights. But how can brands maintain quality and ensure thoughtful content if they’re expected to produce and...

Article: Facebook to See Three in 10 Mobile Display Dollars This Year
Mobile ad spending is set to rise to $7.29 billion in 2013. Google will take home more than half of total mobile dollars, while Facebook will make a strong showing in mobile display revenues, accounting for nearly three in 10 this year.
Article: TV Advertising Keeps Growing as Mobile Boosts Digital Video Spend
eMarketer’s latest ad spending forecast projects continued, if moderate, growth for US TV ad spending, which will remain larger than digital ad spending through at least 2017. But digital video ad spending is growing much faster, especially on mobile devices.
Article: In South Korea, Facebook Is Companies' Social Network of Choice
Facebook is the most popular choice for companies and institutions in South Korea looking to establish a social networking footprint, even ahead of blogging and local sites. Other US-based companies are also popular among institutions there, including Twitter and YouTube.
