Explore What Is Positive Parenting

When I first heard about positive parenting, from a colleague of my husband's, it sounded like hippy nonsense. We had already adopted the preschool's discipline method of counting to three and expecting the children to modify their behavior during that count. Why did we need to use only positive, encouraging methods of parenting when punishment and threats seemed so effective? The Ultimate Staycation Begins Today!

Spring break begins tonight, in our neck of the woods. But instead of jetting off to the mountains and the ocean tomorrow night, I've got exciting things planned here at home: laundry, spring cleaning and bike rides with the kids. That's right, folks, the staycation begins at 5 p.m. (Except for one last work task Monday morning.) Writing the Dreaded Self Evaluation

Years ago, a previous employer required every employee to write a self evaluation as part of the annual review process. We had to sum up our performance over the previous year, identify major accomplishments and explain any lapses or missed goals. I dreaded it with every fiber of my being. The Ultimate Book Review of "Lean In" by Sheryl Sandberg

After weeks of pleading, I finally received a review copy of Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, just a day before it was released to the public. So please forgive me for being a bit late to the discussion of women "leaning in" to careers begun in the New York Times, Slate and Huffington Post, among others. (Can I make up for the delay with an overambitious headline?) Best Buy Joins Backlash Against Flexible Work

On the heels of Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer cancelling telework across the company, Best Buy has ended its flexible work program, known as Results-Only Work Environment, one of the earliest and more prominent examples of corporate workplace flexibility. The program let white-collar employees -- not retail store workers -- telecommute or work the alternative schedules they desired as long as they achieved desired business results. Inspired by Marissa Mayer and Sheryl Sandberg -- What Is Your Work-Life Vision?

This week has been filled with one catchy headline after the next about Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer banning telework company-wide and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg's upcoming book Lean In that reportedly encourages working women to seize professional opportunities rather than backing away from them from fear of disrupting their work-life balance. (I haven't been able to get a book galley from Sandberg's publicist, or I would give you a first-hand report!) Read Full PostInspired by Marissa Mayer...

Taking Time for Reflection

Today I reached the end of a long stretch of work that began before Christmas. Of course, there are always a few lingering questions and loops to close before I'm truly done, but it was a tremendous relief to turn in the last assignment. Marissa Mayer Cancels Telework for Yahoo! -- Legions Ask Why

Yahoo! Chief Executive Marissa Mayer made headlines over the weekend, again, by canceling telework company-wide. This just months after she barely broke a sweat delivering her first baby (a healthy boy) before returning to work from what I wouldn't call a maternity leave -- more an extended long weekend. Prepare to Ace Your Annual Review

I've never worked for a company with a formal employee evaluation and advancement program. But the annual review is almost impossible to avoid. It was almost more pressure to have only one shot a year to make a case for a work promotion or raise. 2012's Five-Star Metro Dc Area Hospitals

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance, HealthGrades (www.healthgrades.com/about) analyzed patient outcomes data for virtually every hospital in the country across 26 different patient cohorts. Their risk adjustment methodology considers important differences in patient demographic (e.g., age, gender) and clinical characteristics (e.g., underlying medical conditions) that could increase the patient’s risk of mortality or complications. Risk adjustment of the data is needed...

Asperger’s Syndrome

Imagine you are sitting in the back of your child’s class during the Science Fair. You are just about to discover “How Temperature Effects the Growth of Mold” when you overhear pieces of the parent’s conversation behind you. “So what is up with this Jay kid? Do you think he is dangerous? He pushed my daughter just because she sat down in what he said was his seat at lunch. There are no assigned seats, and why would he want to sit with the girls anyway? Then he started crying. He is obviously an...

Healthy Chocolate

We all know chocolate contains incredible health benefits, but we also know that all chocolate is not created equal. So what are some of the important signs to look for when shopping for the “healthiest” chocolate? In one of the first studies of chocolate’s effect on weight, Dr. Beatrice Golomb’s report from March of 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, linked chocolate to “favorable metabolic associations with blood pressure (BP), insulin sensitivity, and cholesterol level.” Results...

Organics: yay or nay?

We all know that when it comes to any commodity, packaging is critical to sales. When it comes to food, stores will waste an inconceivable amount of food for the sake of presentation in an attempt to make sure all fruits and vegetables are fully stocked, only because empty shelves are unappealing; and then they simply discard the leftovers…by the tons. Keeping in mind the drastic lengths to which stores will go to maintain appearances (literally) and nurture presentation rather than content, it...

Longevity & The Mediterranean Diet

I’ve often watched my 94-year-old fatherin- law with his slow but purposeful walk and his peaceful demeanor, and am constantly on a quest to get some insight into his background to get some inkling as to why he has aged so well. The man is constantly on the go. I’m certain he may have more energy than I do at times. And, oh yeah, he’s Italian. That peaked my interest to see if there has been any research on the longevity of Italians or those from the Mediterranean, and did come across a study...

Omega-3s

It can be a challenge to keep yourself healthy, let alone encourage the whole family to stay healthy. But if you commit to making health a priority, it will eventually become a habit. One place to start is heart health: Incorporating more fish and healthy fats into your family’s diet. The benefits of omega-3s are too numerous to list. Omega-3s have been proven to help with brain development and performance, act as an anti-inflammatory, reduce the risk of heart disease and promote healthy...

Women's Groups Call for Passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act

Maybe third time's the charm? For the third congressional session in a row, Democratic lawmakers have introduced the Paycheck Fairness Act, aiming to close the gender pay gap. What is the Paycheck Fairness Act, you may ask? The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland and Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, would stiffen penalties for wage discrimination against women and give the government more tools for cracking down on pay inequity.
